Being a mom is so Wonderful
Something changes within you. Something so close, so real, so intimate. Like a slow, divine release of oxytocin that begins the moment you know there is life growing inside you — and honestly, never quite stops.
As an obstetrician, I have had the privilege of walking alongside mothers at every stage of this journey.
I have seen the wonder in their eyes at that first ultrasound flutter.
I have watched exhausted new mothers look at their newborns with a love so fierce it fills the entire room.
I have seen toddlers run to their mums after a fall, knowing instinctively that there is no safer place on earth.
And I have sat with mothers of grown children — proud, a little tearful — watching their babies step into the world as adults.
Every single time, I see it. That overwhelming, beautiful, all-consuming thing that words simply cannot hold.
I am a doctor. I am also a mother. And I can tell you from both sides — the science explains the oxytocin, the hormones, the bonding. But it explains nothing of the feeling.
Nothing of those knobby little fingers pressing against you from within. Nothing of that first smile that breaks you open completely. Nothing of the way your heart quietly reorganises itself around this one small person — forever.
It is not always easy. But it is always, always worth it.
ONCE A MOM ,You are the not the same anymore!
I wrote this poem years ago, on a quiet night when the house was still and my heart was too full to sleep. It was written because some feelings simply demand to be expressed. Today I share it — for every mother who has ever felt this and found, like me, that words fall beautifully, wonderfully short.
Being a mom
It's so wonderful..
From the feeling
Of the new sparkle within
From the feeling
Of a flutter within
From the feeling
Of the knobby fingers
From the feeling
Of the kicking time
Being a mom
It's so wonderful...
From the twinkling eyes
That look up to you
From the first smile
That's lovely like the morning dew
From the babbling notes
That fills the skies so blue
From the first steps
That makes the world seem small
Being a mom
It's so wonderful...
From the clinching fist
That holds you tight
From the hopeful looks
That overcomes fright
From the loving caress
That circles your arms
From the joyful sound
That calls you mum
Being a mom
It's so wonderful...
From being the guide
When things go down
From being the hand
When times seem wrong
From being the stare
That says it all
From being the hope
When there's despair
Being a mom
It's so wonderful...
From seeing the little tod
Grow into a lad
From finding caring
In the acts and words
From seeing the spark
In the thoughts
From decoding ambition
In the young man
Being a mom
It's so wonderful...
Time flies
And the little bird is ready to fly
He always remains her loving child
The apple of her eye
The limelight of her life
And a gentleman ready to rise
Being a mom
It's so wonderful…
And when that little bird finally spreads his wings and flies — Your heart aches and soars at the very same moment. That, perhaps, is the most wonderful thing of all.
